What is the MBT Foundation?
The Marcia Brady Tucker Foundation (MBTF) is a family foundation that exists to support charitable giving. It was originally created by Marcia Brady Tucker and Carll Tucker as a way to make personal charitable gifts. After Marcia’s passing, her family decided to continue the foundation’s mission—and we still carry that tradition forward today.
What Does It Mean to Be a Family Foundation?
We are a private, independent foundation funded by an endowment. Our primary purpose is to make grants to nonprofit organizations. Since MBTF is managed by family members, it falls under a specific type of independent foundation known as a family foundation.
Who Can We Give Money To?
We can only give grants to nonprofit organizations that are recognized by the IRS as tax-exempt under section 501(c)(3) of the tax code. This means they have an official letter from the IRS confirming their nonprofit status.
How Can I Give to a Charity?
As a member, you have three ways to direct foundation money to a charity:
Board-Approved Grants
You prepare materials and present a request at a board meeting.
The board votes to approve or deny the request.
Discretionary Grants
You prepare materials and present a request at a board meeting.
The board votes to approve or deny the request.
Member Match Program
You donate your own money to a nonprofit.
The foundation matches your donation—up to 4 times your gift amount!
Example: You donate $100 → The foundation can match up to $400 (for a total of $500 to the charity).
The maximum match per member per year is ~$9,000.
Why Do We Have Rules?
To maintain our tax-exempt status, we must follow government regulations. This means keeping records, holding meetings, and filing an annual IRS form 990-PF, which documents our financials and grantmaking activities.
Welcome to the MBT Foundation—we can’t wait to see the impact you’ll make!
